Hydrophobic Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membrane Modified with Silica Nanoparticles and Silane for Succinic Acid Purification Using Osmotic Distillation Process

Recently, osmotic distillation (OD) has emerged as an alternative process for the concentration and purification of heat sensitive components. However, OD performance was severely affected by membrane fouling wetting, which could be minimized through surface roughness creation energy modification. This study incorporated silica nanoparticles coated tridecafluro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyl-1-triethoxysilane at various onto polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to improve its hydrophobicity, limiting contact between foulants in feed solution surfaces. Generally, addition reduced water angle (WCA) membrane, but inclusion silane had increased it. These membranes were then tested with 1 wt% succinic acid 50 calcium chloride stripping solution. PVDF that have been modified 1:50 volume ratio achieved a transmembrane flux 0.6019 kg/m<sup>2</sup>⋅h, highest among silanated membrane. due larger pore size retained after silanization. A rejection rate 95.66% above fabricated this study. Overall, successfully utilized shown potential process.
